Most lingerie companies recommend hand washing of all these items as the spinning motions of your washing machine can damage the delicate fabrics, helping the inevitable break-down of fibres and elastics. Hand washing in cold water helps prolong the life of lingerie but really, most of us don’t have the time to spend an hour each weekend standing over the bathroom sink patiently washing out our bras and knickers.
So how can you keep your undies luxuriously soft and wearable? Here are our tried and tested tips to help you!
- Use a lingerie bag (a mesh bag to place your delicates in for the machine) or an old pillowcase if you don’t have a bag
- Always wash using cold water
- Use the gentlest setting the machine has
- Add a little extra gentle detergent to help safeguard the fibres and elastic. Specialty detergents made specifically for lingerie are widely available these days
- Make sure to fasten all hooks and closures on the items before washing. If they are left undone, the hooks on bras can snag other pieces
- When the machine wash has finished, spread the lingerie out on a towel laid over a flat surface and let it air dry
- Do not wring out or twist bras or other garments with wires, boning or stays. The twisting motion will ruin the shape of the piece.
